Volunteer & Parent Participation

There is no shortage of opportunities for you to share your gifts and time. Volunteerism is ongoing throughout the year and we couldn’t do what we do without you. The following is a sampling of ways that you can get involved. Contact Mary Henley, Community and Resource Development Manager, at mhenley@vws.ca to learn more. Thank you for your support!

This is a key role that is usually shared with another class parent and is staffed very early in the school year. The class representative (class rep) acts as a liaison between the class teacher and parents/guardians. All class reps meet together throughout the year to share information and support one another. The best way to support our charming community hub is to staff the store for a few hours weekly, monthly or during the very busy Waldorf Winter Fair in November.

Your class teacher may request that parents and guardians support their work by collecting pine cones, stitching bean bags, saving egg cartons or cardboard containers that will be used for children’s work in the classroom. Before the school year begins, you may also be invited to join other parents and guardians to tidy the outdoor play-yard and classroom. Your class may also undertake event fundraising which you will also be encouraged to support. When your child’s class presents their play, your time, talent and generosity will most definitely be requested.

[toggle_content title=”Waldorf Winter Fair”]

This wonderful event is gifted to our children and community every year because all parents and guardians take a role in bringing it to life. Your class rep will let you know how you can support the unique responsibilities held by your class. If you wish to take on a larger role, consider joining the Fair Planning group or becoming an Event Coordinator.

[toggle_content title=”Community Fund Development”]

Our whole community is invited to participate in building a multi-level culture of philanthropy that supports our School to thrive. From participating in class-specific fundraising events and initiatives to lending your time and ideas to the development of an annual giving campaign, your energy, expertise and enthusiasm are always welcome.

[toggle_content title=”Gardening”]

If you would like to help beautify our grounds and play yards through the year, your efforts will be appreciated. Light work is typical, tools and equipment are supplied and no experience is necessary. It’s not uncommon to see volunteer gardeners pulling weeds or pruning bushes while their young children play nearby.

[toggle_content title=”Special Events”]

Our special events include Parent Education Evenings, Open Houses, Community Forums, the Spring Market, and community socials. Your participation in helping with special events may involve setting up chairs and tables, displaying signage, cleaning up after the Spring Market, decorating spaces, or picking up refreshments from a local bakery. Getting involved with special events is a great way to form connections with families through all of the grades while lending a much-welcomed hand or two.

[toggle_content title=”Baking”]

It’s always lovely to offer delicious freshly baked goods to our community and guests at Waldorf Welcomes, Open Houses, receptions and meetings. If you have culinary skills to share, consider offering to bake on occasion for these and other events.

[toggle_content title=”New Family Connect”]

Families join our school community throughout the academic year and it’s our wish to connect each new family with a family that has a longer history with the school. This is an informal way to support newcomers to our school, and perhaps even to our city or country, by reaching out to say hello and offer assistance.
